With global trends indicating a clear shift towards more sustainable production and natural, plant based ingredients, the horticultural sector is left facing an abundance of new challenges as well as opportunities effecting the entire supply chain. In this paper the innovative approaches adapted to cactus pear crop management is holistically evaluated as limited information regarding thereof is available. Due to the diverse nature of the cactus pear, multiple sectors in industry have already successfully established business models that can be evaluated as to establish the cactus pear as an emerging crop satisfying the ever increasing demands of consumers and key role players in industry with favourable economic implications. The cactus pear offers unique properties allowing for multiple applications in the food and health sector, medical, cosmetics and even packaging and textile industries. It is further noted that the correct crop managements aims to address sustainability, global water crisis and local community improvement and social development due to its exceptional geographic adaptability and diversity. Furthermore, innovative developments through 'green chemistry' has led to the formation of ecological friendly edible films and packaging which aids in furthering the move towards the reduction of plastic usage. It must also be noted that the food industry alone contributes an alarming amount to the world's overall usage of single-use plastics. However, these new approaches are not often well accepted as manufactures and key-role players are often limited by rigid manufacturing standards and legislation, which is of specific concern in developing countries where economic implications are of specific concern. Consumer awareness and uptake of alternative solutions must also be considered.
