Background and objectives: Wild-simulated ginseng (WSG) is naturally cultivated in a forest environment without any artificial facilities and chemicals. The growth characteristics and ginsenoside contents of WSG can be affected by the soil properties of the cultivation field. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the correlation among soil properties, growth characteristics, and ginsenoside contents of different-year-old WSG. Materials and methods: Various growth characteristics of WSG (stem length, stem diameter, number of leaflets per stem, leaflet length, leaflet width, petiole length, rhizome length, root length, root diameter, number of rootlets, total weight, dry weight, and root weight) were measured. Soil properties were measured through a soil analysis manual made by Rural Development Administration in Korea. Ginsenoside contents were measured by HPLC analysis. The correlation among soil properties, growth characteristics, and ginsenoside contents of WSG was analyzed through Pearson's correlation analysis method. Main results: Most of the growth characteristics, soil pH, and exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg) in 13-year-old WSG were significantly higher than in 4-year-old WSG; however, available phosphate of 4-year-old WSG soil was higher. The contents of Rb2, Rb3, Rc, Rd-p, and Rg3 of 4-year-old WSG were higher than the 13-year-old WSG in the leaf part. Otherwise, in the root part, the contents of Rb1, Rf-p, Rg1, Rg6, and Ro of 13-year-old WSG were higher than 4-year-old WSG, while the contents of F2-AS and Rd-p of 4-year-old WSG were higher. In correlation analysis, the growth characteristics of 4-year-old WSG were correlated with more ginsenoside types. Furthermore, the correlation between soil properties and ginsenoside contents also differed through leaf and root in the same-year-old WSG. Perspective: Based on the results obtained from this study, growth characteristics, soil properties, and ginsenoside contents of WSG in different WSG cultivation sites additionally will be investigated for the selection of the most suitable cultivation site of WSG.
