An in vitro culture of Arachis hypogaea L. is a potent source of biologically active antioxidant compounds, in particular resveratrol and its derivatives. The present study evaluated the interactive effect of Serendipita indica culture filtrate alone or in combination with sonication on the production of stilbenes such as resveratrol, piceatannol and piceid by callus culture. Callus cultures were obtained from leaf explants on Murasighe and Skoog (MS) supplemented with picloram and treated with varying concentrations of culture filtrate for different durations. LC/MS analysis of the callus extract showed an increase in resveratrol (14.04 µg/g), piceatannol (58.8 µg/g) and piceid (95.32 µg/g) content when elicited with the fungal filtrate, in contrast to the combined treatment with sonication which generated a decrease. Among all treatments, 2.5% of the culture filtrate after 6 hours of incubation led to the highest accumulation of these compounds. These results indicate that Serendipita indica culture filtrate can be an effective elicitor to enhance the production of stilbenes as a source of antioxidants promoting human health.
