Alternative methods for the production of plant antioxidant compounds enjoy great interest especially for pharmaceutical purposes. In the present research, the significance of cultivar (orange and yellow), the application of MgO during cultivation on the field and chosen phytohormones in the growing medium on callus growth and antioxidative properties of obtained callus were investigated. Cultivar choice was most significant for callus production and the synthesis of health-promoting metabolites. The best combination of all desired properties was found in the callus of cultivar Flacoro cultivated without MgO fertilization and regenerated on a medium with kinetin and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (synthetic MCA-value 0.238). The worst performance was found at the cultivar Yello Mello (synthetic MCA-value 0.839) independent of the applied phytohormones and for the cultivar Flacoro (synthetic MCA-value 0.810) under addition of MgO and independent on the growth hormones.
